About the UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE)
The UPSC Civil Services Exam is widely considered one of the most prestigious and challenging examinations in India. It serves as the gateway to premier services like the IAS, IPS, and IFS.
The examination is conducted in three successive stages:
Phase I: Preliminary Examination (Objective Type)
The Prelims serve as a screening test and consist of two compulsory papers (200 marks each).
- General Studies Paper I: Covers History, Geography, Polity, Economy, Science & Tech, Environment, and Current Affairs.
- General Studies Paper II (CSAT): Covers Comprehension, Interpersonal skills, Logical reasoning, Analytical ability, Decision making, and Basic numeracy. This paper is qualifying in nature (requires 33%).
Phase II: Mains Examination (Descriptive Type)
The Mains exam is designed to assess the academic talent in depth and the candidate’s ability to present his/her understanding in a clear and coherent manner. It comprises 9 papers in total:
- Qualifying Papers: Indian Language and English (300 marks each).
- Papers to be counted for Merit:
- Paper I: Essay (250 marks)
- Paper II: General Studies I (History, Geography, Heritage & Culture, Society) (250 marks)
- Paper III: General Studies II (Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice, IR) (250 marks)
- Paper IV: General Studies III (Technology, Economic Development, Biodiversity, Security, Disaster Management) (250 marks)
- Paper V: General Studies IV (Ethics, Integrity, and Aptitude) (250 marks)
- Paper VI & VII: Optional Subject Papers I & II (250 marks each)
Phase III: Personality Test (Interview)
Candidates who qualify the written Mains exam are called for the Interview.
- Total Marks: 275 marks
- Objective: To assess the personal suitability of the candidate for a career in public service by a Board of competent and unbiased observers. It evaluates mental caliber, social traits, and interest in current affairs.
